According to researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 5.4 million adults in the United States, or 1 in 45, have autism.
This is the first estimate of autism prevalence among American adults. The findings were published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.
The researchers used data from the National Survey of Children’s Health to estimate adult prevalence by adjusting the numbers for mortality and cross-referencing with Census data.
The study found that 2.21 percent of adults across the country have autism, with prevalence varying by state. The states with the largest populations of adults on the spectrum include California, Texas, New York, and Florida.
The study also found that autism is more common in men compared to women. The research is part of a broader CDC effort to assess autism in a wider range of ages.
